SUSAN's STATEMENT

"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me:
I am a free human being with an independent will."
Jane Eyre (1847)
Charlotte Bronte

I started out as a computer software engineer and mathematician. I came to patchwork and quilting while living in America as a result of my husband's career.

On return, I completed City and Guilds parts 1 & 2 in Patchwork and Quilting with Joan York, and the Diploma in Stitched Textiles at Windsor with Jan Beaney, Jean Littlejohn and Ros Hills. I am now a freelance tutor and lecturer as well as teaching the City and Guilds courses in Patchwork and Quilting at Eastleigh College in Hampshire. I exhibit with several different contemporary textile art groups.

My work is mainly concerned with our life experience, my recent pieces have considered ageing, and also woman's struggle to fit in head cook and bottle washer together with being superwoman into her day. For the last few years I have been experimenting with sculptural forms, mainly standing figures, but I think this year I shall work on some soft pieces again or perhaps a mixture of the two.

I plan to investigate the effect of the media on our lives for my next body of work, although currently I am working on a series of pieces based on my trip to Italy that I took as a result of winning the Charles Henry Foyle awward for stitched textiles in 2003
