Women Through Their Lives
My main inspiration comes from people, the way they live, the way they interact with each other and how they deal with the trials and tribulations that they are faced with throughout their lives.
This installation 'Women Through Their Ages' deals with the issues of age, each piece representing a different time in a woman's life. It consists of four sculptures, each one having a sentence associated with it.
It is this text that has inspired each piece.
The first piece represents the child, it is worked in mainly white and silver, using white knitting and delicate pink and blue stripes and checks. The phrase associated with this piece is 'Out of the Mouths
of Babes'.
The second represents the teenager, it is worked mainly in denim and black leather embellished with some lacing, rhinestones and banana bars. The phrase associated with this piece is from a song by the group Queen
'I Want to Break Free'.
The third represents the prime of our life, this is worked mainly in green and uses flowers to represent the blooming and bountiful nature of pregnancy. The phrase associated with this piece is 'In the Prime of
Life'.
Finally the old lady, she is worked in red and purple, with knitting, muslin and felt used for the textural surfaces. This piece is inspired by the Jenny Joseph poem 'Warning' and so its phrase is 'When I am an
Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple'
Working on these sculptures has made me realise how we age, and just what it is that defines each particular stage in our lives.
